Ramblings from...Ooh, GEESE!
Morality
Published on October 13, 2008 By messiah1 In Ethics

Ok.  I'm a meat eater, I love it.  Nothing tops a good steak in my book.  My wife, she has sworn off meat in favor of a vegan lifestyle.  No animal byproducts if she can help it.  Which is hard if you look at the ingredients of things.  I try to be supportive, but something that causes intense "discussion" between us is this.  Is it morally wrong to eat animals?  What makes it wrong?

Is a vegan a better human because they don't eat meat?  Why?

This is not a question about health.  I know veg is better for you than most meat.  If you answer that it's better for you, prepare to be flamed for being a non-reading retard.  This is a question about morality.

Is a vegan better than one who eats normally?

Uh...not in my opinion.  I dislike people that munch on plants all day thinking that they're better than people who eat meat.

If you want to be vegetarian, that's fine...whatever makes you happy...though demonizing someone who enjoys a good slab of meat isn't cool.

I love animals...hell I'm a zoology major, but I also enjoy eating them.  I don't see how there's a moral component...it's not like a sadistic act.  Slaughter and consumption of animals has been happening since there were animals to slaughter and consume by humans, other animals, and even the occasional plant.

Plants are also alive...no one seems upset when we harvest them by the ton.  It just seems an odd argument to place yourself on a moral high ground because you don't eat meat.  Why are animals taboo but killing innocent plants somehow okay?  A life is a life, is it not?

That was going to be my argument against an all life has value comment.  Plants are alive, they communicate with one another, they feel, they evolve just like all other life.  But noone bitches when they are havested.

But noone bitches when they are havested.

Because they're not outwardly adorable and cuddly.

Also, after plants they don't have anything to fall back on to eat...and therefore will starve and die.

Life is a cycle...things die for other things to live...no avoiding it.  Even plants need some of the organic matter from decaying organisms.  So I figure might as well have a good steak instead of torturing myself with lettuce and tofu.
